The following pics shows the boats that Bengt has built after
his start at the maritime Museum in Stockholm.
His first boat was the Bohus skiff, followed by theStarboat.
By the way she is not tackled, but on the other side, who has
ever seen a tackled ship with saIL on dry land? |

bättre "driv i rodden".
Lifesaving rowing boats like Särdal was used to save distressed
seamen. The model is a replica after a boat preserved at
Harplinge folkmuseum in Särdals old life saving station. The idea for a lifesaving boat arose through
private initiative and the "Särdal" should be manned by the local fishermen and farmers (!) The intention with the boat built
in Sweden at the start of the 1900´ with the aim to rescue seamen in distress.
This was the reality: On coastline of the
dangerous Swedish west coast along Halland more than 100 ships were lost, often
with the whole crew. 10 oarsmen
manned the "Särdal". In rough weather the boat was partly filled with water thus keeping her steadier in the
breakers. |

Särdal life
saving station. The station was erected in 1908 by the Swedish General Shipping Society and
paid through
donations. During the September storm in 1903 were many ships were wrecked and people on the wrecks shore stood
helpless and saw the wrecks beeing broken down in the heavy sea, many times with the whole
crew.Now they needed
urgently a sea-worthy boat enabling them to save distressed seamen. How to pay for the boat was an open question
until a
donator saved the enterprise. In summer 1906 the rowing lifeboat "Otto Stenberg" was collected
and on the 28 Oct.1908 the
Särdals life- saving station was opened and at the same time the station had a sort of
show down with the volontary
personnel. According to the Boards protocol of the 2nd April 1953 we can
read: From the Swedish Lifesaving
Society came
an inquiry if the folk society in Särdal for the future could take over the responsibility
and
protection of a lifesaving boat
stationed at Särdal. According to the papers of the 6th August 1957 the Swedish LSS
had arranged to the folk society in
Särdal to be the new manager for life-boat and all other inventories. In the station is not only the lifeboat to
be seen but
also all sorts of fishing tackle.

The wooden tile on the photo was
giving instructions to them on board ships in distress how to handle the rope that was
shot
with a rocket apparatus from land to ship. The instructions in the
pictures are in Swedish but English as well as German
ones were also available. |

i garnen.
This model mostly called the "Fruitbasket" by envious
colleges in
the branch shows a salmon-skiff from Haverdal north of
Halmstad. A well in the stern was intended for an outboard motor. Ugly boats to look at but useful
for there purpose.
These boats were used to pick up fish caught in the stationary salmon nets in shallow waters
along thecoast of Halland.
The strange shape of the boats was to avoid being caught by the nets while picking
up fish.
